For centuries, Christians have set sacred stories in song to praise and glorify God, giving voice to the deepest longings of the heart. Join Washington National Cathedral as we celebrate the beauty, breadth and power of liturgical music at the 2020 Sacred Choral Music Festival on February 14–16.

Led by Canon Michael McCarthy and the Cathedral music staff, the festival invites adults and young choral musicians to participate as we celebrate our passion for liturgical music together in the spiritual home for our nation.

Haydn: Seven Last Words of Christ Thursday February 20 2020 at 7:30 PM

× One of Franz Joseph Haydn’s greatest works is the set of sonatas collectively known as the “Seven Last Words of Christ.” The composer’s aim was to make this work accessible to everybody, regardless of their musical or religious background: “Each sonata, or movement, is expressed in such a way that even the most uninitiated listener will be moved to the very depths of their soul.”

× The Cathedral’s Haydn Festival begins with an appropriate bow to Franz Joseph Haydn as the king of the string quartet. Haydn’s more than 60 quartets are extraordinary and unique in creativity and texture. Featuring the Diderot String Quartet, the Cathedral’s Quartet-in-Residence, tonight’s program presents Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op 33 known as 'The Bird', paired with the final work written by Felix Mendelssohn, his quartet in f minor, Op. 80.

× Franz Joseph Haydn wrote some 60 Piano Sonatas, all of which exhibit the same evolution in compositional style that we see in his string quartets. Tonight’s program, led by the incomparable French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, will explore Haydn’s piano sonatas in the grand yet intimate surroundings of the Cathedral’s Great Choir, just as Haydn would have intended.
