In the period between World War I and World War II, England experienced a musical resurgence that not been seen since the time of Henry Purcell 200 years earlier. Tonight’s program, presented by the combined forces of London’s Bach Choir and Yale University’s preeminent choral groups, pays homage to that golden age of English music. Esteemed conductor David Hill highlights composers including Vaughan Williams, Charles Villiers Stanford and Arnold Bax, culminating in William Walton’s masterpiece, “Belshazzar’s Feast.”

The Cathedral’s Haydn Festival begins with an appropriate bow to Franz Joseph Haydn as the king of the string quartet. Haydn’s more than 60 quartets are extraordinary and unique in creativity and texture. Featuring the Diderot String Quartet, the Cathedral’s Quartet-in-Residence, tonight’s program presents Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op 33 known as 'The Bird', paired with the final work written by Felix Mendelssohn, his quartet in f minor, Op. 80.

Franz Joseph Haydn wrote some 60 Piano Sonatas, all of which exhibit the same evolution in compositional style that we see in his string quartets. Tonight’s program, led by the incomparable French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, will explore Haydn’s piano sonatas in the grand yet intimate surroundings of the Cathedral’s Great Choir, just as Haydn would have intended.

Combining the forces of French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, the Post Classical Ensemble and Cathedra, we invite you to explore and celebrate what happens when Franz Joseph Haydn works on a larger canvass. His extraordinary piano concerto exhibits his mastery of orchestral color and creativity, and his “Lord Nelson” Mass – probably the finest of his Mass settings – offers a sense of the works that flowed from the patronage of the church.
