English Musical Splendor Saturday March 14 2020 at 7:30 PM

× In the period between World War I and World War II, England experienced a musical resurgence that not been seen since the time of Henry Purcell 200 years earlier. Tonight’s program, presented by the combined forces of London’s Bach Choir and Yale University’s preeminent choral groups, pays homage to that golden age of English music. Esteemed conductor David Hill highlights composers including Vaughan Williams, Charles Villiers Stanford and Arnold Bax, culminating in William Walton’s masterpiece, “Belshazzar’s Feast.”

Drumming the Heartbeat of God with Katy Gaughan Thursday March 19 2020 at 7:00 PM

× Drumming is an embodiment of prayer inviting us to listen deeply to the heartbeat of God. Joyful and uplifting, we discover our own rhythms and connect to the rhythms of others. Join us for an experience of group drumming to learn the basics of how to play the drum and how to create wonderful music together. Bring your own drum or use one of the drums provided. × This spring, explore artmaking and spiritual practice on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. Each week combines a spiritual discipline (silence, observing nature, intentional movement, meditation) with art making activities. Using a variety of materials, craft images as a response to your surroundings and senses. Each session engages a different discipline and location within the Cathedral so come to one or all of the programs. No previous experience with art or contemplation is necessary, only curiosity and a willingness to engage the creative process.

Haydn’s more than 60 quartets are extraordinary and unique in creativity and texture. Featuring the Diderot String Quartet, the Cathedral’s Quartet-in-Residence, tonight’s program presents Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op 33 known as 'The Bird', paired with the final work written by Felix Mendelssohn, his quartet in f minor, Op. 80.

× Franz Joseph Haydn wrote some 60 Piano Sonatas, all of which exhibit the same evolution in compositional style that we see in his string quartets.
