A License to Thrill

× Wednesday, January 16 2019 at 7:30 PM
Be surprised by some tasty off-the-menu music from the little-known Hyacinthe Jadin, who was born the same year as the United States. One of Jadin’s contemporaries, Charles Caleb Colton, coined the maxim “imitation is the sincerest [form] of flattery.” If Colton's word is true, then Jadin’s op. 2, no. 1 string quartet makes the cheeks turn red on Mozart’s “Dissonance” quartet: the two pieces begin with a shockingly similar—and similarly shocking—introduction.

× Wednesday, January 23 2019 at 7:30 PM
Experience gamelan—the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments performed by multiple performers at once—in the sacred space of the National Cathedral. Gamelan has by far been the non-Western musical genre that has most impacted the Western classical music tradition, beginning with the 1889 Paris Exposition. This program explores its influence across the past 120 years.

Mozart's Requiem

× Sunday, April 14 2019 at 4:00 PM
As Christians begin the annual journey through Holy Week, the Cathedral offers Mozart’s Requiem. Played on original instruments of the Classical period, this profound work is performed in the edition completed by his student, Franz Sussmeyr. The performance begins with the Requiem by Herbert Howells, interpolated with reflective arias from a selection of J.S. Bach’s cantatas. Discovered after the composer’s death, it was written to the memory of Howells’ son, who died of polio at the age of nine. Howells never recovered from this loss and this beautiful unaccompanied miniature Requiem expresses devastation and yet a profound sense of faith.

Beyond Psycho: Bernard Herrmann

× Saturday, June 1 2019 at 7:30 PM
Bernard Herrmann may be “the most under-rated 20th-century American composer.” He’s famous as a film composer—Psycho, Vertigo, Citizen Kane—but his concert output was long overlooked due to prejudice against Hollywood. The highlight of this program is the 30-minute radio play, Whitmanwith music by Herrmann and script by the Norman Corwin, the genius of American Radio. In celebrating Walt Whitman’s 200thbirthday, “Whitman” pays homage to the poet as an inspirational messenger for the wartime home-front.
