Thematic Tour: Ironwork Monday October 9 2023 at 2:00 PM
Master blacksmith Samuel Yellin called wrought iron the “salt and pepper of architecture.” Explore the magic of wrought iron in the Cathedral—from fantastic creatures to stunning flowers, all unique and made by skilled hands. A wrought iron expert will explain techniques and talk about some of the master smiths who have contributed to the decoration of this great building. Visitors will hear briefly about blacksmiths and how they do their work and then will go on a walking tour both on the main level and the crypt to inspect a variety of wrought iron created by premier blacksmiths over almost one hundred years. Their works include gates, grills, chandeliers and candlesticks.
